Barbara Crow
Barnett
Feb 2, 1940 — Apr 18, 2023
Friona
It is with great sadness the family of Barbara (Crow) Barnett announce her death on April 18th, 2023. A private service was held. Arrangements by HANSARD FAMILY Funeral Home of Friona.
Barbara was born on February 2, 1940 in Hereford, TX. Her birth was marked by Groundhog day and a snowstorm. Spring must have come early that year. She was the 3rd child of Clifford and Madge Crow and their first baby born in a hospital. Her sense of adventure was nurtured in childhood as the family moved to Arkansas, East Texas and Washington state before returning to settle in Friona when Barbara was a Senior in high school. She graduated from Friona High School in 1957 and set out to Omaha, Nebraska to train for a job in the airline industry. Those plans were interrupted when she eloped with Gerald Barnett on St Patrick's Day (March 17), 1958 and moved to Lubbock. Together they set out on adventures of their own while raising three children; Vicki, Michael and Mark.
In Lubbock, Gerald attended Texas Tech and worked while Barbara made a home and raised the children. Armed with a new degree, they set out to teach for the Bureau of Indian Affairs in both Arizona and New Mexico. Once the kids were all in school, Barbara went to work outside the home. She worked at the kids' schools in various capacities and then went to work for Union Geothermal Company in the Jemez Mountains of New Mexico. When Gerald retired from teaching, the family moved for Barbara's job opportunities with Union. First to Houston and then to Amarillo. One last opportunity led Barbara and Gerald back to Los Alamos, NM where Barbara worked at Los Alamos National Laboratory until her retirement in 1995. They returned to the Panhandle and settled in their home north of Bovina where they lived at the time of her death. She and Gerald celebrated their 65th wedding anniversary just before her death.
Barbara was a loving, giving person for whom family was all important. She taught her children to love the outdoors and the simple things in life. She always nurtured her children's dreams and was happy for their successes. She grieved and cried with them when there were losses and hard times. She took care of parents as they aged and passed away. She always had time for the people who needed her.
Barbara is predeceased by her parents, Clifford and Madge Crow, her oldest brother, Gary Crow, and her baby sister, Linda Lancaster.
Left to carry on her memory are her husband, Gerald; her three children, Vicki, Michael (Martha) and Mark (Elizabeth); her 5 grandchildren, Julia Barrett, Jacob Barnett, William Barnett, McKenzie Barnett and Benjamin Barnett; and her three great-grandsons, Riggs, Boone, and Sonny Barrett. She is also survived by her beloved sister, Nancy Norwood, brother Larry Crow, nieces and nephews and her much loved cats.
Barbara was well known for her love of animals and her many rescues throughout the years. In lieu of flowers, she would be happy to know that people made a donation in her name to the Friona animal rescue, Parmer Paws PO Box 333 Friona, Texas 79035.
