Betty Jean Thompson-Seider (Jeanie) was born in Hale Center, Texas in September of 1953 and she passed away at the Methodist Hospital in Dallas on October 4, 2025. She was preceded in death by her husband, Daniel Seider; her mother, Betty Cirillo; her stepmothers, Beth Thompson and Norma Thompson; her father, Dave Thompson, and her brother Davey Thompson.
Jeanie was late to begin talking and one day just walked up to the kitchen sink where her mother was washing dishes and said, “may I have a drink of water please.” Her mother was startled because she had never heard that voice before. After that Jeanie was anything but silent for the rest of her life. Her younger days were spent living on the family farm in Tulia, Texas. Marsha, Jeanie and Dinah shared a bedroom at Tulia and when they cleaned their room Jeanie put all her mess under the bed. When anyone couldn't find something, we would say," Look under Jeanie's bed.” Jeanie spent her time playing with siblings and cousins who lived next door. Jeanie was the ringleader in creating many small plays and circuses to include everyone as well as many cats and dogs. Those were the days of freedom and laughter for all.
Eventually, Jeanie moved with her father to Friona, Texas. While attending Friona High School, she played basketball, played the oboe in the band, and performed as a twirler. Jeanie also sang in the youth choir at Friona Baptist Church, and she often sang solos, duets, and trios with friends. She would spend summers with her mother in Canon City, Colorado at the historical Dewies Dye Estate, which was renamed Fascination Farm.
After high school graduation, Jeanie attended college in San Marcus where she studied education with a bilingual emphasis in Spanish. She taught ESL for the Plainview School District for two years before going to Texas Tech to attend law school. She was a Phi Beta Kappa and was active in her sorority. Once Jeanie earned her Judis Prudence she worked for the District Attorney in Wichita Falls. From there she became the city attorney for Cleburne, Texas. She married Daniel Seider and they moved to North Dallas where Jeanie opened her own family law practice. She retired after 30 years of practicing law.
Jeanie loved her family very much and she lavished a great deal of attention on her nieces and nephews, even taking them as a group to many major league basketball games to see the Mavericks, both in Dallas and Portland, Oregon when they played the Trailblazers. She was a terrific aunt, making Halloween costumes for a niece or nephew every year. She hosted her nieces and nephews who lived out of state for a week when they were in junior high, so she could get to know them individually. Early on she even became an avid gamer just so she could spend time with them. Jeanie was a thoughtful and generous gift giver. She would spend months searching for the most unique gifts for everyone for both birthdays and Christmas, and she prided herself on making sure each gift looked as if it was professionally wrapped. She was very creative. Jeanie loved planning Christmas get togethers. One Christmas we spent in Friona Jeanie gave all the children Nerf Guns. Grand Dave and the grandchildren had the best time playing with those guns and playing football for hours that Christmas Day. Her husband, Daniel, was Jewish and she tried to celebrate those holidays with him and make them special.
Jeanie was fortunate to have been able to travel to see England and most of Europe several times. She bought a cabin on a small lake in Winnsboro, Texas where she loved to go on weekends to fish and relax. She and Daniel also enjoyed going on several cruises, a practice she continued after Daniel passed in 2016. Whatever she was doing, if we needed to reach her, we could count on was she would be in Dallas when the Mavericks played.
Jeanie loved all her pets dearly, especially her dog Lucky. She took her dogs to countless dog parks throughout the country. She was always in search of the best dog parks wherever she went.
Jeanie is survived by her sisters Dinah Thompson, Marsha Cline, and Janie Malloy and also by her brothers Terry Thompson and his wife Mary; Craig Hodges and his wife Vaughn Ann; John Robert Hodges and his wife Jean; and James Hodges and his wife Mary and many nieces and nephews. Jeanie is truly missed by the many who love her.
