Billy Darrell Smith, 85, of Bovina went to be with Jesus on April 12, 2026 in Clovis, New Mexico. Viewing will be held from 9:00 AM to 8:00 PM Wednesday April 15, 2026 with family visitation from 6:00 PM to 7:30 PM in the Ron Smiley Memorial Chapel of the funeral home with Celebration of Life Services set for 2:00 PM Thursday April 16, 2026 at the First Baptist Church in Bovina with Pastor Chris Craig and family, officiating. Burial with Military Honors following in the Bovina Cemetery entrusted to HANSARD FAMILY Funeral Home of Friona.
Billy was born June 11, 1940 near Texico, New Mexico to Odom and Elsie Smith. He graduated from Farwell High School then attended a television and radio repair school in Denver Colorado. Billy joined the Air Force in March of 1961. He married Brenda Sue "Suezy" Estes on September 9, 1961. Twin daughters were born in August of 1963 at Shepherd Air Force Base in Wichita Falls, Texas. Billy, Suezy and the twins moved back to Bovina after his military service in 1965. A son, Kevin, was born June 9, 1967 to complete the family.
Billy was active in the First Baptist Church of Bovina and served as a deacon and Sunday School teacher for many years. He also served in various volunteer organizations in Bovina – Jaycees, Lions Club, American Legion, Fire Department, EMS, and Chamber of Commerce.
Billy worked in the grocery business for many years, had a submarine sandwich shop, sold insurance, and worked for the City of Bovina.He loved serving God, spending time with family, and camping and fishing.
Billy is preceded in death by his parents Odom and Elsie Smith, his wife Suezy, three brothers – Glen Smith, Dean Smith, Gerald Smith, and one sister, Wilma Whitener.
He is survived by his children: Arlene Brozek and husband Justin; Darlene Miller and husband Stan, all of Bovina; and Kevin Smith and wife Crystal of Hereford. Also, 6 grandchildren and 8 great-grandchildren.
