Joan Prosser King, 91, died Monday, February 10 2025 at her home in Friona with her family by her side. Viewing will be held from 9:00 AM to 8:00 PM with family visitation from 6:00 PM to 7:30 PM Friday February 14, 2025 in the Ron Smiley Memorial Chapel of the funeral home with Celebration of Life Services scheduled for 2:00 PM Saturday February 15, 2025 at the Friona Methodist Church with Pastor David McGaughy officiating. Burial following in the Friona Cemetery by HANSARD FAMILY Funeral Home of Friona.
Joan was born May 10, 1934 in Plainview Texas to Ted Prosser and Clara Garner Prosser. In May 1952 Joan graduated from Plainview High School and a few days later married the love of her life D.T. King on May 31. They went on to have 4 children Kathy, Teddy, D.T. Jr. and Kelwin.
After Teddy and Kathy were born in Plainview they moved to Bovina, Texas in 1956 becoming members of First Baptist Church of Bovina and welcomed Dee and Kelwin who were born in Friona. Joan was the chief cook and bottle washer for her husband as the family traveled and custom harvested for over 30 years. In 1985 they got into the trucking business where Joan drove alongside her husband as co-drivers until his passing in 2010. She was well known in the trucking community and had a reputation for her heavy foot. Joan was a member of Rebeccas, Friona Booster Club was a teacher for RA's, GA's, Sunday School and VBS at her church in Bovina. As a mother she participated in all her children's sports and school activities. Joan is best known as Meme to her grandkids and great grandkids. Her love and influence was not limited to her family, Meme impacted many children with her love and support. She was an avid bowler for over 50 years with many people from Friona and the surrounding areas including her mother, daughter, granddaughter, sister, cousin and niece.
Joan is proceeded in death by DT, her husband (2010), her mother and daddy, her brother Sonnie Prosser and her sister Roberta Billings.
Those left to cherish her memory are Kathy and husband Rickey Rector of Horseshoe Bay, Texas, Teddy and wife Connie King of Gainesville, Texas, Dee and wife Cindy King of Amarillo, Texas and Kelwin and wife Sheila King of Amarillo Texas. Also a nephew that she raised Ted Prosser and wife Sasha of Whitharrel, Texas. She was blessed with 11 grandchildren and 24 great grandchildren. Adopted family she accepted as her own is too many to count. Nora Gonzalez her precious friend and caregiver and her family that made her family.
